Ups and Downs

Granny has been having ups and downs for the past couple weeks.  She's either up, shopping & cleaning, or she's down, sleeping day and night.  She was sleeping for 4 or 5 days prior to a visit to Geriatrics for a whole-health check up.  She was somewhat argumentative and paranoid, which tests revealed were symptoms of a hyperthyroid state.  After reducing her thyroid dose, she still had slight signs of dehydration and overall felt run down.  Another trip back to Geriatrics this past week revealed that she was only slightly on the dry side, but otherwise in good health.

So today she shopped at Walmart; tomorrow she may sleep.  Your guess is as good as mine.  A Friday visit to the surgeon went well, with nothing new to report.  Healing is coming along beautifully, and it may still take some time to fully recover.  The doctor has reminded us to continue to stretch the jaw so that her mouth can open up again.  After our visit, Granny began thinking of things the doctor could maybe do to make her mouth even better instead of using that big mouth piece.  Our next visit to the surgeon will be in August, so she can be prepared with more questions and ideas for him.

On a different note.  We are sad to say Goodbye to another family member, Aunt Marg.  She is near and dear to my heart for one particular, silly story Granny repeated throughout the years.  Growing up, Marg and her sisters were afraid of their mother's wood burning stove.  After chores and sweeping floors, the girls were to empty the dustpan into the fire, which scared the dickens out of them.  Upon getting too close to the flames, many a dustpan found their way into the fire.  Marg's mom was clearly not thrilled, and her mother swore that she would pay them back one day, and sure enough... when that mother went to visit the grown daughters in their new homes, the dustpans all disappeared.
